Home Assistant Voice - Preview Edition

by Home Assistant

Meet Home Assistant Voice (Preview Edition) – the first voice assistant built for Home Assistant, by Home Assistant.

Open-source, privacy-first, and designed to blend seamlessly into your smart home, this sleek little unit gives you hands-free, local voice control over your devices without sending your every word off to the cloud.

With dual microphones and an advanced audio processor, Home Assistant Voice cuts through noise to pick up your commands loud and clear. The multicoloured LED ring lets you know when it’s listening, and a hardware mute switch ensures total privacy when you need it. A tactile rotary dial lets you tweak the volume (or LED brightness), and a multifunction button gives you even more hands-on control options.

It's ready to slot neatly into your Home Assistant setup. The built-in speaker handles notifications and feedback, while a 3.5mm audio jack lets you connect external speakers for a bigger sound.

It’s small. It’s smart. It’s totally open. And it’s here to give you a sneak peek at the future of private, local voice control.

What is the Preview Edition?

Voice assistant functionality in Home Assistant is currently in early stages and is still being expanded on and improved. This Preview Edition is best suited to folks who are excited to participate in this process. If you're after a comfortable Alexa or Google-like experience you might want to wait a bit!

Check out Smart Home Solver and NetworkChuck's videos for an idea of what to expect.

Notes

  • Power supply not included - requires 5V 2A USB-C (we recommend the Raspberry Pi 15W USB-C supply).
  • Requires Home Assistant - needs a Home Assistant setup to function.
  • Speech processing performance depends on your hardware - if you're using a Raspberry Pi or similar low-powered hardware and need faster response times then using the Home Assistant Cloud processing service may speed things up.

I needed an economical replacement for an old Pi B+ that was running out of oomph for the application I was using it for. A 1Gb Pi 4b fills the bill nicely at a very reasonable price. ... and it really is a **lot** faster! :-)

Great product from pimoroni. I have used it for a mobile robotic cart, a fixed robotic arm, network attached storage, 3d print monitoring & control. I bought this pi4b with 2gb for a mini Observatory called pilomar on instructables.

Amazing piece of kit. I upgraded from a Pi 3B so I could play more stuff on Batocera. It plays everything you can throw at it.

I wanted to upgrade by Home Assistant configuration as it was running slowly on a PI 3. A pi 5 was overkill but the pi 4 model b is ideal for current and future home automation.

The Raspberry Pi is an excellent platform for a wide variety of uses. A full-blown ARM Linux system with a wide array of GPIO and other capabilities (SPI, CAN, I2C, etc.). Easy development tools readily available and lots of onine help for a wide variety of tasks. A great introductory platform for those just starting out and a great SOC platform for those looking to do more advanced microcontroller tasks.

I had purchased this to use for octoprint to control my Creality 3d printer. As expected it met all my needs and is very useful in controlling and printing. I have 3d printed a shell and added a fan to ensure it is always cool.

This is my second Pi4, this time a 2GB because I was using it for an OctoPi setup for my 3D printer. It's a great bit of kit. Pimoroni were great (and I'm proud to support a company just up the road). Good value, fast delivery. Got Octopi/octoprint set-up in minutes and was away. My other one is set-up with Home Assistant et al. Really powerful little board that opens up a world of possibilities for managing your house or just fun projects.

I have several RPi 4B's in service and can say with confidence, the extra RAM does increase performance dramatically. Glad they are becoming available again.

My Pi arrived the next day and I was quickly up and running. I’m using it to run various Docker containers headlessly, so I haven’t tested out the HDMI capabilities. Top tip, if you use the official Raspberry Pi Imager software you can preconfigure your Wi-Fi settings and SSH key information. That means you just apply power and the Pi is immediately on the network and SSH access works out of the box.

Product itself as expected - excellent. What was over and above was the after sales customer support. I had an issue with the RPI and a new one was shipped out FOC and a free return (Royal Mail pickup) was arranged. So easy thank you.

It's great these are finally back in stock - they are a brilliant and versatile little mini computer - great for a variety of software and hardware projects or even just for use as a general computer as they have plenty of power. You can never have enough because you will keep coming up with new ways of using them and on that note I will be buying more - just waiting for the 8GB model to come back in stock.

Brilliant little computer that is perfect for so many computer projects. In my case it was paired with an Argon One m.2 case and used as a Plex media server. The extra RAM and processing power of the Pi 4 8GB model is a substantial improvement over the Pi 3 and well worth the upgrade. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase, but don't just take my word for it, buy one and find out for yourself.

With 8GB this Pi4 is far better able to cope with being used as a Desktop Computer and when running memory hungry applications than my older 4GB model was. Reasonable price and everything seems to be working fine.

This is my first 8 GB model, on which I installed the 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS. I have several 4 GB boards which do several jobs on my home network. They're speedy and reliable. I also note that they run Rocky Linux 9 very well, too.
