Scroll pHAT HD

by Pimoroni

A whole heap of LED pixels with individual brightness control, for scrolling messages, animations, and more - Scroll pHAT HD!

Scroll pHAT HD packs 17x7 pixels (119 total) onto a single pHAT, and gives you full PWM brightness control over each pixel. Create beautiful animations and even anti-aliased text by taking advantage of the per-pixel brightness.

Now also available in beautiful coloured versions: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and pink!

Use Scroll pHAT HD as a scrolling message display for your tweets, the weather or the news, or use it as a 17-band spectrum analyser for your audio. There's even enough pixels for simple games like Tetris, Pong, or snake.

Features

  • 17x7 matrix of bright white, or coloured, pixels (119 total)
  • Individual PWM brightness control of each pixel
  • Uses the IS31FL3731 LED matrix driver chip
  • Scroll pHAT HD pinout
  • Compatible with all 40-pin header Raspberry Pi computers
  • Python library
  • Female header requires soldering

Software

Our handy one-line installer will install the Scroll pHAT HD Python library for you. We've included a bunch of examples too, to show off what you can do with Scroll pHAT HD.

A great little display that attaches to my Phat Stack, The software repository is well documented and easy to understand for the lesser programmer.

Over 50 years ago I was using gas discharge dot matrix displays by Burroughs that had the same beautiful orange glow; these are much coarser resolution but perfect for small displays.

Very bright & easy to use. A beautiful display with lots of uses & decent examples. (I wish they worked with Picos and had more than one I2C address.)

I have found this raspberry pi hat to be very useful and looks excellent when lit but unfortunately there is one led which does not light up. It still looks good though. Thanks

As doge would say- “much wow” (I cringed writing that) So nice to have all those little LED’s clustered together and the Python libraries are awesome too!

Great board, easy to solder pins and connect following the instructions available from Pimoroni - and pretty straightforward to program with some cool examples available.

A lovely little dice, and the libraries are so intuitive yet flexible. So many potential uses in mind for this little guy. And I love the yellow colour! (Though the other colour options available look great too!) I would recommend getting the pHAT diffuser Pimoroni sell to go with this, takes it to another level!

Super bright! I accidentally soldered my connector on the wrong way so triple check before getting the soldering iron out...

Great piece of hardware. Very bright if required. The i2C connection is great as it still leaves so many free pins on the PI. The examples on Github are excellent as well, I've set mine up to display live share price information and mounted it inside a Coffee can. Have spent the last 7 days tinkering with it. I bought the green one, and happy with my choice of colours!

these ScrollpHAT HDs are brilliant, i use them to display tiny scrolling infomation from the web such as twitter hashtags and also cryptocurrency values, i also have one that notifies me if a server is down! the library is great and there's also lots of superb example projects to get you started!

Very easy to connect up to the Raspberry Pi and get started. The LEDs are too bright for most purposes at the highest brightness setting, but the brightness can be finely controlled with one line from the supplied Python library.

No need for boring LCD displays. These can be read from anywhere in the room. Great for my music streamer - https://youtu.be/2eyldiKmjz8 A great and really easy to use product.

Nice and bright LEDs, working beautifully, will be using it a lot. Plenty of scripts available, although many of them needs to be fixed ,as the have a lot of errors.

easy to wire up, (only uses a few pins of the 40 way connector). the code is easy to run and edit, works a treat. I'm using this to create a light field for a microscope.

This is an excellent item with really bright LEDs - good job you can turn the brightness down! The 7*17 array of LEDs is great for scrolling messages, especially if you keep the scroll rate fairly fast. I'm using the Scroll pHAT HD on a slower Raspberry Pi zero so I reduced the sleep delay in the example code to speed up the scroll. I guess on the full Pi you wouldn't need to do that. The Python library is easy to use, and the examples given are really good for showing you how to program it. I was really surprised to find that you can combine a static border with a scrolling centre area if you want. My only criticism is that I wanted to use the Scroll pHAT HD for a clock display which you can do but the letters are a little narrow and hard to read. Just a few more columns (say to 21*7) would mean easier to read characters.
