pHAT Stack

by Pimoroni

A preposterous pile of peripherals on your Pi! Mix and match 3 HATs or 5 pHATs into a platter of functionality. Use pHAT Stack for specific setups and projects, or just as a handy way to use several HATs or pHATs at once.

pHAT Stack is the big brother to the Mini Black HAT Hack3r. It has 6 sets of 2x20 pin headers, one for connecting to your Pi with the included ribbon cable, and the other 5 for a mix of HATs and/or pHATs. The kits include rubber feet to hold pHAT Stack steady (and prevent it from scratching your desk), and metal standoffs to mount your HATs and pHATs firmly in a more permanent fashion.

Note that you'll need to ensure that there aren't any pin clashes between the boards that you're using together. To check which pins are used by each board, check them on pinout.xyz, or try the pHAT Stack configurator!

Check out our getting started guide for more tips on using pHAT Stack.

Features

  • Five sets of 2x20 pin headers (plus one to connect to your Pi)
  • HAT and pHAT mounting holes (M2.5) and labels
  • Handy pinout, including BCM numbers and descriptive labels

Kits include

  • pHAT Stack PCB
  • 6x 2x20 male GPIO pins (pre-soldered in fully assembled kit)
  • 5x pairs of black brass standoffs
  • 4x rubber non-slip feet
  • 40-way black GPIO ribbon cable

Provided there aren't any clashes between the pins used by HATs and pHATs, you can get pretty crazy with the boards that you combine together. Boards like Four Letter pHATScroll pHAT HD, and Unicorn HAT HD are ideal for displaying data in dashboard-type setups, and boards like Touch pHATPiano HAT, and Drum HAT let you add input to your projects. There are some suggested setups below.

Suggested setups

Build an itty-bitty beat box with Piano HATDrum HAT, and Speaker pHAT. Because Piano HAT and Drum HAT use different I2C addresses, they'll work quite happily alongside each other. Speaker pHAT gives your beat box a built-in speaker.

Make an alarm clock, or even a radio alarm clock, with Four Letter pHAT, Touch pHAT, and Speaker pHAT. Display the time on Four Letter pHAT, use Touch pHAT to cancel or snooze the alarm, and Speaker pHAT to beep when the alarm goes off!

Create a weather station with built-in dashboard using Enviro pHATFour Letter pHAT, and Scroll pHAT HD. Show the current temperature on Four Letter pHAT, and a graph of recent temperature readings on Scroll pHAT HD.

Notes

  • Solder yourself and PCB only kits require soldering
  • When using HATs, be careful not to short pins on components on the underside of the HATs. A couple of pieces of insulating tape on the underside of the board can protect against this.
  • Board dimensions: 162x65x1.75mm(LxWxH) (dimensional drawing)

Perfect for the Pi-hat obsession. If you like hats and want more of them, I reccomend this. I’d definitely leave my hat on for this awesome addition to my Pi family!

An ingenious item! Why just settle for 1 HAT/pHAT?! I have mine set up with a Blinkt, Scroll Phat HD, and a GFX Hat, with room for another HAT or two pHATs The pHAT Stack Configurator is also fantastic at helping to assess what HATs/pHATs will work together, though I do wish there was an option to manually tick off pins for non-pimoroni peripherals.

Great development tool for use in my Pi projects where I need to test and LCD display and a DAC simultaneously. Before this I was using extended headers which proved to be too unstable! Thanks again for a great idea and great test rig !

Does the job well; make sure you check compatibility of any HAT/pHATs and watch out for power usage!!

Easy to use lets me add a hat and the tower fan on my pi 4 , and have space to add even more stuff . Only thing id like is a ribbon cable that doesn't go over the pi , and instead goes away from the pi so i can get more room for the heatsink and fan i ordered to have more airflow , but its not meant to go with the fan i bought , luckily its all installed and working a treat .

This brilliant Raspberry Pi accessory allows 3 HATs or 5 pHATs to connect to one Pi. Alternatively, put a 40-pin socket under a Pi Zero, and that takes the place of a pHAT. Lets me install a LoraWAN and a ScrollHD pHAT and an Explorer Pro HAT to make a flexible Lora Node. Gorgeous!

So I'm not an expert in any regard. Anything that lets me avoid using a soldering iron is a positive in my book. This is great. I've whack a pitft and a joy bonnet on here, bolted the pi to the back and i've got a little handheld pico-8 machine. And I've got space to spare for the keyboard hat that (please please please) will one day exist. Really robust. Well made and I love pimoroni's style. Fantastic product.

Exactly what I had been after as an owner of several HATs. Perfect for being able to see which ones you can use together in different projects. I plan to use this to combine the Touch pHAT with the Inky pHAT and Inky wHAT for example, or to trigger different effects on the Unicorn HAT HD. If you want to mix and match your HATs, this is the product for you! Spend a few extra ££ to get the fully assembled version and note that the cable that goes into the GPIO pins needs to go across the Pi's body, not the way that you might think - which results in the cable being connected upside down.

Great product, and fast delivery. No complains about the product. However, it did take me a while to figure out that you had to connect it with the cable crossing the pi (white part of the cable closest to the usb ports on pi 2). Luckily, no fried hats due to connecting it wrong. An included connection picture would have helped. This also caused some problems as I wanted one connection to a t-cobbler, with the cable in the other direction, putting the breakout board on top of the connected hat. Moral of the story: great product, but check your cables.

For someone like me, who have a lot of pHATs, this is a great product. I use mine with a Raspberry Pi Zero W (with female header), a Touch pHAT, a Enviro pHAT, a Scroll pHAT HD and a Blinkt for a really neat weather setup (still place for one more). It's very well made and pretty robust, mine is screwed to a wooden rack. The "experimental pHAT Stack configurator" is very useful too. Another great one from Pimoroni!

If you've been playing around with Raspberry Pi boards for any length of time the chances are you've collected a few expansion boards (Hats). It would be nice to be able to connect more than one at a time to your Pi and use them side by side or simply not have to unplug one board from your Pi when you want to use another one. That's where the Phat Stack comes in. Like the bus board systems for earlier computers it lets you install multiple boards on the samePi. I bought the soldering kit and put it together in a few minutes. If you don't like soldering you can get one fully assembled for a couple of extra quid. Once done you connect it to your Pi and plug in your pHats and Hats. Pimoroni have a great console tool for installing the pHat/Hat software for all your boards and the pinout website allows you to see which boards will work together. This is a great tool for anyone with more than one Hat in their collection and I'm only surprised it was thought of sooner. Recommended.

The (p)HAT Stack is extremely useful when you need to use multiple HATs in a project. It's very easy to use and the stack configurator works fine for me. If you like using HATs, you should probably get this stack!
