Scroll HAT Mini

by Pimoroni

A 17x7 matrix of bright white LEDs with individual brightness control, and four handy buttons, made for Raspberry Pi. Just the job for scrolling messages, animations, and more!

Scroll HAT Mini's 119 LEDs are plenty for scrolling text, and the individual PWM brightness control over each pixel opens up a whole heap of potential for swish animations. The buttons could be used to toggle through modes or menus, for playback control, or even to control simple games. The pre-soldered header means there's no pesky soldering!

Use Scroll HAT Mini as a scrolling message display for your tweets, the weather or the news. There's even enough pixels for simple games like Tetris, Pong, or snake, using the buttons for controls.

Features

  • 17x7 matrix of bright white LEDs (119 total)
  • Individual PWM brightness control of each LED
  • IS31FL3731 LED matrix driver chip (I2C addr. 0x74)
  • Four tactile buttons
  • Mini HAT-format board
  • Fully-assembled (no soldering required)
  • Compatible with all 40-pin header Raspberry Pi models
  • Python library
  • Dimensions: 65x30x10mm

Software

As always, we've got a handy Python library for controlling your Scroll HAT Mini. It's shared with Scroll HAT Mini's predecessor Scroll pHAT HD, but we've added a few examples of how to use the buttons on the newer board.

I had some problems with the X-Hat when it arrived, but PIMORONI was quick to get a replacement sent out to me. Had a few problems with setting up sound on first boot, but have been able to configure it to eliminate most of these issues. I had an older 8" Picade, it was physically much larger, but I like the smaller form factor better. Its just as ergonomic but takes up less space when languishing on the shelf! Plus there are many new, improvements. I also purchased the Plasma Light kit and installed it during assembly. Highly recommended! I want to try to poke around to make certain pertinent buttons flash at the proper times (like the START button for instance). I'll report back when I have that all working. Thanks!

I hadn't read the details about the PICO-8 license, so I just assumed it was only the hardware and then I had to figure it out with retropie or something else on the software side. I was surprised about the tools provided and it will be a great learning experience for my nephew into the world of programming, electronics and everything else around these topics. Will surely get some other things in the future.

The Picade is an absolute gem for anyone diving into Raspberry Pi arcade projects. Having delved into my second unit, I leveraged an existing RP4 and found the assembly process remarkably smooth, thanks to the comprehensive and user-friendly instructions provided on Pimoroni's website. Remarkably, I didn't need to scour YouTube for tutorials. However, while this kit is fantastic, I'd caution potential buyers about one minor flaw: the Picade X hat's USB-C socket can loosen over time with use. Fear not, though—I ingeniously fixed this with a bit of Araldite glue once the issue surfaced. Since the repair, it's been rock solid, meaning the need to order a replacement Picade hat or to solder it back on is then no longer required. But let's talk brilliance: those plasma buttons! Enhancing the unit with these buttons was a game-changer. Initially dazzlingly bright, a simple tweak allows for customizable colours, patterns, and brightness, transforming the gaming experience. And the software? Well, let's just say the possibilities are endless. While I can't delve into specifics here, scouring the web for RetroPie images will unlock a treasure trove of possibilities. I've elevated my Picade to an ultimate retro gaming paradise, thanks to a 1TB image teeming with classics. Now, onto my ambitious plan: linking two Picade units for epic two-player action. It's possible but will require thoughtful consideration and a specific 'player x module' also avail to buy on the site. Or you can also use 'netplay' features supported by some RetroArch cores which is easier to setup.

This was a fun build! Everything was clearly labeled, and the end result is something that really stands out. I've always wanted an arcade machine, and having this little guy around always puts a smile on my face.

I've got loads of options for 'retro gaming' - Pi in a NES case, Emulators galore on Mac & PC....but nothing feels as good as playing old arcade hits on a real [but minature!] cabinet. The build is a really fun project and very well documented, both by Pimoroni and all across the web & YouTube. Nothing more challenging than taking your time and handling a screwdriver. The quality of the components is pretty good. All the parts are a perfect fit and the buttons & stick feel solid. Screen (10 inch for me) is very bright and crisp. Software set up was as easy as flashing the included SD with Retropi and running a cURL script for the X Hat. Needed a tweak to the Alsa driver for the volume but pretty easy to google and find. The volume was loud on first boot!! But, not at all distorted. Impressive. Only issue I suffered was that the USB -C power input on the X Hat was soldered on badly and failed :(. Credit to Pimoroni support - they offered to replace straight away. Quality aftersales support as always!

Very nice project, though the build is rather on the cheap side. Still a lot better than anything I could have built myself. Software-wise you are pretty much on your own but there are enough blogs out there to help out with the OS and getting rom images. I had the unfortunate surprise of being hit by import tax and DHL fees amounting to about 100€ for a delivery to France. Fair is fair but just be warned that this ends up being a lot more expensive than it first appears.

This is a great set that is well designed. I installed Raspberry Pi 3A+ inside it to run and play retro games on my 8bit computer (NEC PC-8001) emulator. A "Space Invaders" photo I posted has the gaps between scan lines on that screen, but it is for emulation as old low resolution CRT. PICADE10 10-inch LCD is very good. Yes ofcourse there is no gaps on that display ordinaly. The only downside is that GPIO26 (Pin 37) is not bypassed by the HAT and cannot be used normally.

Easy to setup and configure. It would be useful to include the Picard key mappings with the pi hat installer to avoid having to remap them. Or include the intended mapping of the joystick for retrofit. There are a few forum posts about needing to run a fan with the pi4. It would be useful for the online guide to advise if a fan is needed.

Really great product but you need to know how to build and complease the kit to use it. Son is excited to play what he called "old school" video games!

I had a blast putting this together! Was a great learning exercise. Very happy with the quality. Getting Retropie all configured correctly took a bit of research, but that's the fun, innit?

One of the most fun builds I’ve done in a while. The actual building was enjoyable. Just the right level of guidance and figuring things out for yourself. Then there is the fun of actually playing as well as the tinkering. If you are a tinkerer. This is the project for you.

The kit was of good quality and I enjoyed building the Picade. I am very happy with the finished product. The only complaint is that the supplied micro HDMI adaptor especially on the micro side tends to bend easily resulting in lost HDMI signals. Had to find a replacement adaptor in the end.

Just the right balance for a beginner to feel like they're getting their hands-on, without the need for soldering or any deep understanding of what's going on. The online instructions are excellently *written*, with the one caveat that the photographic illustrations don't always show you what you need to see. For example, I was not the only person having to check out the Pimoroni forums to see exactly how the display ribbon connector fit! Luckily, every question I had had already been asked and answered. A genuinely enjoyable process.

Really happy with the 10-inch Picade. Shipped really quickly, was well packaged and assembly straightforward and really enjoyable. Getting retropi installed was dead simple and configuration effortless. I have several retropi setups, but this one is the most joy to play. This was my first look at an arcade build and it has me inspired to try a more personalised and custom build

I received my kit in record time. There was some mixup from UPS part which delayed the delivery (not pimoroni's fault). I received it a week earlier than anticipated anyway. The design is well thought. I had hours of fun trying to build it then even more time of fun trying to modify/hack it to my own taste. I was happy to see that I had some additional parts too. There are clear instructions & many tutorials + video available if you ever get stuck. There are some cool goodies (stickers, pin, poster) Cons: The included video card I received had a broken connector: LVDS connector (the one with the membrane). Luckily, I was able to fix it with some crazy glue & fixing the metal pins with some tweezers.

Really good... pretty simple to build if you take your time, although the instructions were a bit variable in that respect (started off very detailed then I think the person writing it got bored...). Took me about 2.5 hours. "First we'll connect up the LED part of the button. Push the spade connectors on the red and black wires onto contacts 1 and 2 (the ones sticking out of the blue bit), either way round." -- that aint going to work for an LED.. esp. when the description later on plugging in the other end is so insistent about polarity.. That's the only actual error I found though. I didn't use the stickers - was really expecting something that went on the side as a decal but that's possibly me not reading the description properly.

I've been after one of these for ages and managed to nab one on sale. It was worth the wait! The (online) instructions and build quality are excellent and I was up and running in no time. Love showing the kids some of the games I played when I was younger and being portable means we can hide away when not needed. Would recommend it to anyone who enjoys (retro) games with an arcade feel!

I had no problems building the Picade and I'm pretty average at these kind of things. Joystick and buttons work great. I upgraded mine to a Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT joystick and Sanwa buttons just because I could, but not a huge difference TBH. Once I had installed RetroPie, I had to lower the volume though. Might be good if they have the steps to do this on the website. I then applied a fast CRT scanline curved filter which IMHO makes it feel more authentic. Games feel much better and fun to play on the Picade than a PC and a perfect middle ground for those who haven't the space for a full sized cabinet. One thing I hope is fixed, is I get an error when shutting down. No big deal and don't know if it is just how I installed RetroPie.

Amazing glad i purchased, i would say deffently read the instructions a few times before building especially the display as i jumped from 8 to 10 inch which i had and missed a bit or its missing but got it all sorted and set up, also with new retropie the soundcard was always 100% but changed a setting rebooted and it all working fine
