Grow Moisture Sensors (pack of 3)

by Pimoroni

A trio of Grow soil moisture sensors, for use with Grow HAT Mini or other devices.

These capacitive moisture sensors work using Pulse-Frequency Modulation (there's more info on that in our Grow tutorial). They're a lot less vulnerable to corrosion over time than old school resistive sensors, as there are no exposed electrodes. There's a handy indicator line to show you how far they can be pushed into the soil, and they even have a little area so you can label them with plant names (we think 'Pete' is a great plant name).

It's possible to use Grow moisture sensors on their own with non-Raspberry Pi devices (like Arduino), as long as they're capable of monitoring pulses on an IO pin in the range of ~2Hz up to ~30Hz accurately.

Moisture sensor specifications:

  • Capacitive moisture sensors with Pulse-Frequency Modulation output.
  • Male JST SH 3P connectors (if you need compatible cables, we sell them separately here)
  • Pinout
  • Dimensions: 99mm x 10mm x 5mm (including connector)

Amazing service literally blew my socks off. They came packaged in a capacious condiment of non-conduction collimated to coddle components from careless or callous currents: indeed. Oooarrgh!!

These seem to give a better water level indication than other capacitive sensors. However, there don't seem to be many accessible sources of code to measure their PWM output. The spec says the frequency varies from 30Hz to 1000Hz. However, using code to measure the IRQ transition on the edge only gives a variation up to 30Hz. All three sensors seem to be fairly consistent for measuring water depth which is what I am using them for.
