Adafruit I2S 3W Stereo Speaker Bonnet for Raspberry Pi - Mini Kit

by Adafruit

Hey Mr. DJ! Turn up that Raspberry Pi mix to the max with this cute 3W Stereo Amplifier Bonnet*.

The bonnet uses I2S, a digital sound standard, so you get really crisp audio. The digital data goes right into the amplifier so there's no static like you hear from the headphone jack. And it's super easy to get started. Just plug in any 4Ω to 8Ω speakers, up to 3W, run Adafruit's installer script on any Raspberry Pi, reboot, and you're ready to jam!

It's the exact same size as a Raspberry Pi Zero but works with any and all Raspberry Pis with a 2x20 connector. Tested with Raspbian and Retropie.

Each order comes as a fully tested and assembled PCB and 2x extra terminal blocks. No soldering required if you're using a 3 Watt speaker set, just plug and play. You can either plug a pair of speakers right into the JST jack in the middle, or you can solder the terminal blocks in and then connect any speaker you like! Hey, you can even use a surface transducer!

The tutorial will get you set up, and you'll be rockin' out in 15 minutes.

Don't forget to make sure you have a reliable 5V power supply!

Features

  • I2S digital audio
  • Drives 4-8Ω 3W speakers
  • Connect speakers via JST or screw terminal blocks

TECHNICAL DETAILS

*It's not big enough to be an official HAT, so they called it a bonnet, you see?

Easy enough to use though I found that the zero noise mode took exclusive control of the sound device on rpi and prevented it's use by other software. Also you need to be careful when using with a pi4 as the Poe pins got the bottom of the PCB, I'm printing some 9mm standoffs to stop it dropping down and shorting out.

It is a DAC + amplifier that serves the same purpose as Hifiberry MiniAmp. Just that this one is half the price. The SMD header was quite a useful thing for me since it allowed me to snap it on top of an OnOff Shim soldered to a full-sized header and achieve quite a low stack of devices. But the killer feature of this one is the fact that there is a space to solder pins to break-out different GPIOs without needing to put a breakout header between the Pi Zero and the bonnet. In the pictures, you can see an internet radio using the i2c pins +5V and GND for the LCD; Different GPIOs (5,6,12), 3V and GND for one of the rotary encoders that works as "volume" with the button being MUTE; and the GPIOs 23 and 24 and the GPIO 17 through the OnOff shim button, 3V and GND (through the OnOff shim button's ground). This allows the second rotary encoder to work as MENU, switch on the Radio and -- with a modified script -- switch off the radio after shutdown. The shutdown trigger is achieved differently, by pressing the MENU switch for more then 3 seconds, and not by the daemon that the OnOff shim install script normally instals.

Very good. Important note: In spite of claim here (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-speaker-bonnet-for-raspberry-pi/raspberry-pi-test), the omxplayer does _support_ audio via ALSA (including I2S) since summer 2016. Just use the "-o alsa" option. I'm happy! :-)

Used as part of an audio jukebox I had the speakers already but shortened the cables No problems fitting the board although i had to solder some pins on for the power and gnd as the pin on the PI didnt go through the connecter far enough The software was very easy to install, all was explained regarding the 'click' when playing and how to get rid of it. More information about the gain pins would be useful Power output fine Delivery excellant, iI will probably buy another for a similar project Thanks
