Keyboard FeatherWing - QWERTY Keyboard + 2.6" LCD

by Solder Party

An easy way to add a handheld Qwerty keyboard and a 2.6” color display (+ more) to your project!

It fits well in your hands and is great for typing with your thumbs, early 2000s-style.

Note: This is a Revision 2 of the Keyboard FeatherWing, it changes the touch driver to the TSC2004 and adds an Ambient Light Sensor. Otherwise, the dimensions and GPIO assignments are the same as in Revision 1.

Note: The FeatherWing itself does not contain an MCU/CPU/SoC that you can program; you will need a board compatible with the Adafruit Feather System.

Depending on your Feather choice, this FeatherWing can become a Linux terminal, a CircuitPython REPL, a WiFi client or server, a BLE peripheral, a LoRa communicator, and so much more!

Features and Technical details

  • 2.6" 320x240 16-bit color LCD with resistive touch screen - The LCD driver (ILI9341) is interfaced over SPI, the touch driver (TSC2004) is interfaced over I2C.
  • QWERTY keyboard - A BB Q10 keyboard connected to a SAMD20, the key FIFO can be easily accessed over I2C.
  • 5-way button - Great for navigating menus, also connected to the SAMD.
  • 4 soft tactile buttons - Feel very nice to press, use them for whatever function you want; also connected to the SAMD.
  • Neopixel - Allows you to show the status of your board.
  • Ambient Light Sensor - Connected to Analog pin 5, can be used to dim the backlight based on the ambient light levels.
  • microSD connector - Gotta keep those photos and other files somewhere, am I right?
  • Stemma QT/Qwiic connector - Opens the door to an ecosystem of dozens, if not hundreds, of Stemma QT/Qwiic boards.
  • On/Off switch - Connected to the Feather Enable pin, turns off the Feather at LDO level (varies between Feathers), as well as 5V.
  • GPIO expander - The SAMD20 also doubles as a I2C GPIO expander, you can access the Touch INT, and Card Detect over the expander, also there are a few test points for extra GPIOs.
  • Dual row sockets - Thanks to these, you can still access the Feather pins even when the Feather is plugged in!
  • Four mounting holes - Use these for enclosures or to attach a lanyard.
  • GPIO solder jumpers - Almost all GPIOs can be disconnected from the FeatherWing, just in case you have something else in mind for them.

This FeatherWing makes it simple to use your Feather on-the-go with the LCD serving as output and the Keyboard acting as input. Thanks to the Stemma QT/Qwiic connector, you can attach various sensors to the Wing and process and display the incoming data.

The possibilities are limitless!

What you get

An assembled Keyboard FeatherWing PCB with the Qwerty keyboard and 2.6” color display installed. Just add the Feather of your choice, and you're ready to go!

One of the best, most fun boards I've bought from Pimoroni. Currently have it connected to Spotify API showing a scrolling "Now Playing" display. It's great.

Simply stunning!! The board itself is a lovely well made piece of kit. Nice solid feel, and the Unicorn graphics across the rear of the panel, along with the Pimoroni branding just give you a high quality look and feel. As for the LEDs themselves, they are really high quality. Colours are strong and vibrant, and the peak brightness is almost too bright lol! But, overall a fantastic bit of kit, very easy to hook up and start coding and scripting with. Highly recommended, for any projects, and a must have if you fancy buying yourself a Picade Max for the Marquee!!

This display is so incredibly gorgeous in person, and having the pico w built in and loaded with examples makes it really easy to get going. It’s a really well done and unique product!

Used this to make a clock for our classroom. The clock updates its time connecting to an NTP server. It will periodically (every week) update its time so it is never far off from the actual time.

This is a gorgeous display and thanks to the use of a standardised controller can be used for just about anything, from even timing displays to clocks or tickers. Wifi adds a lot of flexibility: You can remotely upload code using WebREPL, you can use it to synchronise time via NTP, pull in weather data from a web API or even connect it to an MQTT broker and display some live data. The addition of buttons along both edges makes for a nice self-contained unit. I like that the .dxf files are available so that you can easily make an enclosure and it comes from a company with a proven track record for customer support.

The RGB Lights are superb and can go super bright. The onboard demo scripts are a lovely starting point on how the libarys work and it has got a lot of potential! Planning on buying more once I have suffeciently wrangled this one :).

Great display. Range of examples available to download from Pimoroni (+ a couple of others on Gitlab) makes it easy to have something up and running very quickly. Nice, vibrant colours and it seems to stay connected to wifi well. Glad I bought it.

Fantastic board, brilliant LED's with fast response time, and a really easy programming interface via the Pico/MicroPython that makes it a perfect experimental board for beginners or experts alike.

It's RGB LEDs and a lots of them. What more is there to ask for. Just waiting for the inspiration to get hacking with it, at least it worked straight out of the box.

Cosmic Unicorn is easy to use because MicroPython is preinstalled and debugging with Thonny works really well. I used my Cosmic Unicorn to build a clock that also displays the percentage of electricity from renewable sources: https://www.hackster.io/andreas-motzek/clock-and-green-energy-display-with-cosmic-unicorn-641dcb

Great product. I've been playing with this for a few days, pulling down (tiny) images from the network and displaying them using the LEDs. The result looks aesthetically pleasing and coding it was fun and relatively easy to do using the pimoroni-pico libraries. Display updates very quickly and I'm looking forward to playing around with little animations or something interactive. The only change that I'd make is to add pre-soldered SWD headers to make the development cycle slightly easier when using C++. I appreciate I'm likely very much in a minority on that one, though!

I'm very excited about Galactic Unicorn. It's by far one of the things I've enjoyed the most lately. Every single LED can be controlled and so I can let off steam completely freely. My son uses it to pimp his gaming setup and I use it daily as a real time clock. Just a cool piece!

This board is incredible, so many applications are possible. It has a pico w on board so it's super flexible, WiFi and Bluetooth, even a little speaker. You can also connect two breakout boards with sensors and such. Incorporate data from the Internet and you've got yourself an info display with anything you desire to display! News, weather, sports scores, train times, anything! Epic LEDS from planet pimoroni! 🖖👨‍🚀

Works brilliantly from Thonny. I was easily able to set up the WiFi to use #cheerlights that change colour with a Tweet. I also reprogrammed the Nostalgia Prompt to show my favourite computer I work on at The National Museum of Computing.

This is a great board with great potential. I was playing around with some graphics and texts, and this looks promising. Everything works smoothly, very quick responses. I have not tested the Wireless features but I expect this to work well. I have many ideas and not much time, but because the adoption rate is quick, you don't need a lot of time to start playing.

A great display, large and solid with convenient connectors on board for battery/i2c additions. The utilisation of Picigraphics makes this a breeze to make useful and impressive displays. The cost is very reasonable, I remember when a single blue LED would cost £80.00 which puts the cost of 500+ multicoloured LED's with a single board computer in perspective.

I am delighted with this. I intend to write a simulation of the very first computer game I ever played, backed in 1968, on an IBM 7094 (what passed for a mainframe in those days). If at first you can't get the programming to work, keep on trying. The Pico is a wayward little beast that does not always do what it is told, but does knuckle under in the end.

Beautiful hardware! Work in progress software. I'm really impressed with the quality of the display. On the software and documentation side, it needs a little bit of work, so it can be as plug-and-play as Circuit Python. Thank you for making this awesome board, Pimoroni.

This is like the best thing ever. A Pico W, a shedload (two sheds even) of LEDs and buttons and even audio! It's big! A great size for any sort of display application. Planning on using it as a virtual front panel for historical computer simulations among other projects. Also an incredible value for the price! Hope they keep making these for a while. Shipping from the UK to Chicagoland in the US took around 22 days. Really impressed with the packaging too and all the humorous text on the fancy box label. Well done.

A fantastic board to create a display on. As it came pre-loaded with four demos, it was nice to be able to plug it in and see it in action straight away, and it looks good enough to even get genuine family approval (which not every device gets, for sure!). With the examples on the site and github repo, it's easy to get up and running with the GU, and show it off further. I didn't actually realise when I ordered it that the Pico W was already in place, so that was a nice surprise too!

Brilliant board! Bright, fast and great fun. Excellent documentation and support with the usual high build standard. Works straight out of the lovely storage box! It is easy to add STEMMA/QT I2C sensors and the wifi gives it an added dimension. Plenty of buttons for control and the sound system works well. It's bigger than I expected. I've written a couple of extra tutorials which you can find here: https://www.instructables.com/Galactic-Unicorn-Graphical-Workout/ and https://www.instructables.com/Galactic-Unicorn-Bounce-Simple-GFX-Demo/
