Display HAT Mini

by Pimoroni

A generous 2.0" (320 x 240) IPS LCD display for Raspberry Pi with lots of tasty baked in functionality.

Display HAT Mini features a bright 18-bit capable 320x240 pixel display with vibrant colours and formidable IPS viewing angles, connected via SPI. It's got four tactile buttons for interacting with your Pi with your digits and a RGB LED for notifications. We've also squeezed in a QwST connector (Qwiic / STEMMA QT) and a Breakout Garden header so it's a doddle to connect up different kinds of breakouts.

It will work with any model of Pi with a 40 pin header, but we think it goes with the Raspberry Pi Zero particularly well - we've included a pair of standoffs so you can use to bolt HAT and Pi together to make a sturdy little unit. To accommodate the screen Display HAT Mini is a bit bigger than a standard mini HAT or pHAT - it's around 5mm taller than a Pi Zero (so a Mini HAT XL or a Mini HAT Pro, if you will).

Display HAT Mini lets you turn a Raspberry Pi into a convenient IoT control panel, a tiny photo frame, digital art display or gif-box, or a desktop display for news headlines, tweets, or other info from online APIs. This screen is a handy 3:2 ratio, useful for retro gaming purposes!

Features

  • 2.0” 320x240 pixel IPS LCD screen, connected via SPI (~220 PPI, 65K colours)
  • 4 x tactile buttons
  • RGB LED
  • Qw/ST (Qwiic/STEMMA QT) connector
  • Breakout Garden / I2C header
  • Pre-soldered socket header for attaching to Raspberry Pi
  • Compatible with all models of Raspberry Pi with a 40 pin header.
  • Fully assembled
  • No soldering required (as long as your Pi has header pins attached).
  • Dimensions: approx 65.5mm x 35mm x 9mm (W x H x D, includes header and display). With a Pi Zero attached with standoffs, the total depth is 17mm.
  • Screen usable area: 40.8mm x 30.6mm (L x W)
  • Pinout
  • Schematic
  • Dimensional drawing
  • Display HAT Mini Python library
  • ST7789 Python library

Includes

  • Display HAT Mini
  • 2 x 10mm standoffs

Raspberry Pi and accessories are sold separately, check out the Extras tab for some options!

Software

To get started, follow the installation instructions in the Display HAT Mini library. This library contains some examples of how to use the screen, buttons and LED with Pygame. You can also find examples for this screen in our ST7789 Python library, these show you how to write and draw on the screen using PIL to display shapes, text and gifs.

We've also been having fun with fbcp-ili9341 - a high level framebuffer driver for SPI-based LCD displays. The Raspberry Pi OS desktop is a leeetle small on a 2.0" screen, but this might be a good option if you're doing something like building your own custom retro console.

Attaching Breakouts

You can connect breakouts with a Qwiic or STEMMA QT connector into Display HAT Mini with one of these handy cables.

If you have a Breakout Garden breakout without a Qw/ST connector, you can either pop one of these adaptors on the end of your cable, or you can plug a Breakout Extender into the header at the other end of Display HAT Mini (you can find it next to your Pi's SD card slot).

Notes

  • The buttons are close to the edge of the screen, so it's worth taking a bit of care when pressing the buttons that you're not also pressing down on the screen, particularly at the edge with the ribbon cable.
  • Please note that because of Display HAT Mini's extra size, it will overhang adjacent slots on expansion boards like pHAT Stack, Black HAT Hacker, HAT Hacker HAT and Flat HAT Hacker. No shame - every HAT is valid, every HAT is beautiful.
  • We've found two standoffs to be sufficient to keep this HAT firmly in place, but if you want to add standoffs at every corner of your Zero so you can use it to stop a tank or something you can pick up more here.

Came quickly after ordering, great quality on the keyboard, I know this is capable machine after using Raspberry Pi 4 with 4GB RAM.

Needed some kind of PC to bridge the gap between corporate laptop (no private use) and phone. This Pi400 filled the gap perfectly. Performance is not blistering, but this is what I expected. I have Ubuntu Cinnamon on it which allows me to check mail, surf, cloud-based office docs, and listen to music which is all I wanted on a daily basis. Takes me right back to my early computing days with an Acorn Electron with the brains inside the keyboard.

A lovely piece of equipment. Powerful, doesn't heat up and compact. Boots from USB sticks and plenty of ports, I would give it a 9 out of 10. After using it for a few weeks I would have appreciated an additional micro-USB port (slow, if needed) for use with an OTG cable, for emergencies :) This is the best Raspberry Pi I have ever used, speedy, more than enough memory and combined with Linux it is a joy to use. A painless purchase from Pimoroni, swift delivery and the cheapest one around. My tip: get Micro-HDMI to HDMI adapter cable too.

I thought I'd do Chia mining with it, but have just been mucking about with it as a sandbox thing. The built in keyboard is very good, make sure you use a fast micro SD or an SSD attached to a USB 3. (easy enough to change boot order) It's a groovy little bit of kit, quite fun and powerful enough not to be frustrating

The Pi 400 is now supported by OpenBSD, which is what I'm using it for. It all works pretty well. I haven't tested WiFi, but it shows up in ifconfig. Display output works using the EFI frame buffer device, so I have an X desktop running cwm, emacs etc. Text console works fine. It used to be that you had to use a serial device to run the installer, but not any more. All in all I'm very happy with it. The speed is reasonable considering. I'm running OpenBSD from an external USB SSD. I used an SD card to do the initial install, but it doesn't need that any more either (it's *probably* possible to install directly with USB)

A great all in one way into the new Raspberry Pi 4, runs a bit faster than standard due to the heatsink. You'll need a micro HDMI connector!

The ideal Pi if you want to use it as a desktop. Cooling is better than the standard Pi4 because of the inclusion of a metal heat sink. Good value because you don't need a case or a keyboard. Very happy.

I bought this as an experiment but I'm impressed with its capabilities. I am now using it in my home office and it's performing well linking to a remote desktop using citrix. There's very little space between the micro hdmi sockets and I currently can't use a dual screen setup as the adapter I have is too large. I've ordered the micro cable and that should allow usage of both ports. A bluetooth mouse from aliexpress connected immediately and I'm using a wired keyboard. Everything working well out of the box.

We love our Pi400 which I bought my daughter for Christmas. She's mostly been using it for playing online games and it seems to cope well with them (our wifi is the limiting factor, not the Pi). We already have a Pi 3+ so we're used to NOOBS/Raspbian and running things like Python and Scratch scripts but the Pi400 is loads quicker and appeals to my daughter's preference for having a 'proper' computer, i.e. one that looks stylish. All good and I imagine we'll be buying another one for my son before long.

I have all the Pi models from day one. This is the best. Runs very cool even when overclocked. We just need full 64bit O/S Raspberry OS and real accelerated graphics. Flaky on full screen videos. Its a great purchase however.

If you don't own a PI 4 and are looking for an excuse to get one, then this is the perfect opportunity. And because it's a nice easy set up, this one will be used for many different projects =) really nice solid build quality, easy access to all the ports on the back. And for what you get well worth the asking price.

The first ever Pi was useful but a mass of wires. This is good looking and out the box working fun. Get the full kit. Even if you are an expert, that book is a hoot and will help if you are working with new users. The only thing I would add (if there is a 500) is being able to unplug the raw pi. p.s. Pimoroni are terrific people
