Adafruit STEMMA Speaker - Plug and Play Audio Amplifier

by Adafruit

This Adafruit STEMMA Speaker - Plug and Play Audio Amplifier has a class D audio amplifier on board, and Adafruits favorite little 1 Watt 8 ohm speaker.

Connecting it up is easy - you only need ground, 3 to 5V power, and audio signal. The audio signal does not need to be AC coupled, we do that for you, and can range up to the power pin voltage (3 or 5V peak-to-peak). You can use either the 3-pin JST socket or the alligator/sew-pads for this slim and portable package. The sound quality is good enough for music, tones, speech, whatever you like and volume can be adjusted with a small screwdriver.

I'm sure it's a neat bit of kit, but unfortunately, it was about 10mm too big to fit into the projects I was working on. So I can't anything as to its functionality. I totally own that this was my mistake, I misread the sizes. Thankfully pimoroni has this no-fuss return policy so I was able to send it back and get a refund with no bother, (and buy an amp and speaker separately that would fit.

Not deafening but adequate for my purposes (amplifying the Pi headphone output). One slight niggle is the volume control pot is very tricky to turn - not one of my hundreds of screwdrivers fitted it well, so perhaps either ship with an adjustment tool or use one that is easier to adjust?

Running this of a Pi Zero W; you can use a DTO to get the PWM audio signal to it from the rerouted GPIO 18 pin. Simple aplay commands will work - it's loud enough. If you hear a "hiss" then turn the PWM volume (alsamixer command) up to 100% and use the tiny volume screw on the adafruit to turn the volume on the STEMMA down. Don't be tempted to reduce the "volume" of PWM (unless you really know what you're doing!) it probably doesn't do what you expect.
