Pibow Coupe 5 (Case for Raspberry Pi 5)

by Pimoroni

The slim, hackable and attractive case for Raspberry Pi 5.

Here at Pirate Towers, we happen to think that plugging a bunch of fun stuff into a Raspberry Pi is the best thing ever, so we designed a protective case that will let you do that easily.

Pibow 5 lets you access all the ports and connectors on your Pi and even has a clever little tab that will let you push the Pi 5's brand new power button whilst it's safely ensconced in its case. The case is designed to fit neatly around Raspberry Pi's new Active Cooler.

Pibow 5 is available in three vibrant colourways - Ninja (translucent black), Royale (translucent purple) and Rainbow (opaque rainbow).

Raspberry Pi 5 and Active Cooler are not included!

Note that Pibow is not currently compatible with NVMe Base / NVMe Base Duo - we are working on a case solution for these though.

Features

  • Compatible with Raspberry Pi 5 only (view other flavours of Pibow here).
  • Compatible with Raspberry Pi 5 Official Active Cooler
  • Super-slimline profile
  • Fully HAT/pHAT compatible
  • Protects your beloved Pi 5!
  • Clear top leaves Raspberry Pi 5 visible (so you can gaze upon its wonder).
  • GPIO cut-out
  • Leaves all ports and connectors accessible
  • External Power Button Nubbin via compliant mechanism magic
  • Mounting holes on the base that will accommodate M2.5 screws/bolts and the studs on popular Danish ABS construction blocks 👀
  • Made from lightweight high-quality cast acrylic
  • Great for hacking and tinkering!
  • Made in Sheffield, UK

Crafted out of five unique layers including a transparent top that leaves your beautiful Pi visible inside. Each layer is laser-cut from colourful high-quality cast acrylic and once stacked they securely contain a Raspberry Pi 5 while leaving the primary ports and GPIO accessible.

This case is lightweight and ideal for mounting to any surface. No tools are required for assembly or disassembly!

Fairly painless installation, had to adjust the positioning of the pi once or twice to get the layers to sit flat. Appreciate the spare bolts+nuts, since I managed to lose one. Nylon nuts were a bit difficult to start threading, easy once I'd got it started though. No issues so far with the power button level.

I had a nightmare with this case to be honest 🙈 I had to Google how to put it together as it doesn't come with any instructions and at first wasnt clear to me, however its fairly obvious how it goes once I found a guide online and read the steps. It was a bit bit of a "oh yeah.... duh!" Moment. Once on it does look good i like the exposed active cooler look and is great for ventilation if u want to play with over clocking. My nightmare continued though as I found the sd card slot access a bit fiddly, I'd spent the day putting together a 512gb batocera image together on a brand new sd card only for me to not slot it in properly so once I started the pi it didn't load my image up. Then me trying to take the card out the pi to insert properly I ended up accidentally putting a bend in the card, I tried the sd card in my computer and it wouldn't recognise so I then tried to straighten the bend only to snap my card completely in half 🫣 I wasn't best pleased at the time as u can imagine. However i have since then got a new card sorted that out with batocera again and carefully put it in the pi and it's running like a dream and looks good in the case 👍🏻

A nice case but make sure you get it before attaching cooling. Also feels like it could easily be made compatible with things like an NVME base (with long screws) but it isn't really. Regardless, still a useful way to give some structure to my Pi5.

Certain things like the AI Kit, can have screws that are too short, at least on the bottom, as this case stacks up, not sure whether removing a piece can work? It is meant to be an overall case to protect the base Pi, somewhat, not sure about shock damage but least the Pi is not out in the open completely but also not too covered up like the usual cases, so this is nice to be able to see inside. My other concern is also the impact on temperature, with the active cooler its ok hovers around 55'c but could be improved I think.

Unfortunately I found out too late that the case is NOT COMPATIBLE WITH THE NVME BASE since it is not made clear on the product page. Hacking it to make it fit doesn't seem possible, at least with the extremely short ribbon cable of the base, so as it stands I bought it for nothing. It seems to fit well with a bare RPi 5 however.

I was concerned that my Pi5 was a little exposed when using the NVMe base so I bought the Pibow Coupe in the hope that I could adapt the the NVMe base to fit. It was easier than I expected, though having a box full off stand offs helped and my now protected Pi is shown below. I also added a top cover from an original Pibow case to give the SSD a little protection. In summary, a nicely made, good value case that is doing a good job for me.

Have bought a total of 6 of these PiBow Coupe 5 cases since they were released for Pi5, having already bought and used the earlier models, back to the Pi1. Simple to build, look good and function well. Highly recommended.

Pros: Stylish design with a clear top and colorful base. Competitive pricing Cons: Poor fit for mini HDMI port leading to loose connections. May require manual modification for proper cable fitment. ---------------------- The case for the Raspberry Pi 5 certainly brings aesthetics and cost-effectiveness to the table. The transparent top combined with the red base offers a modern look that showcases the Pi's components. However, the case seems to fall short in precision manufacturing. The issue with the mini HDMI port not being snug enough is a significant drawback. This issue could lead to unstable connections and interruptions. Despite its attractive price point, potential buyers should weigh the possibility of having to perform some manual adjustments to achieve a perfect fit for their connectors. For those willing to do a bit of DIY, this case might still be a good choice, but for plug-and-play users, looking for alternatives might be the better route.

Case does what it is expected to do. Only issue was the switch. The instructions tell you that if it doesn’t work to loosen the corner screw a turn or two. I had to loosen a lot. Then the case that depends on the screws as legs now has one corner too short and wobbles. Otherwise works well
